_ I look forward to programming and thinking more laterally about what I can bring into the classroom through game based learning.
Reflection
I found reflection on fun and its relationship to learning to be useful. I think at times teachers are so busy meeting the syllabus that at times we just have to get things done.
Level 2
Where do I start?
writing and science are areas that my students have limited motivation. Writing is a difficult task for my students who are challenged by language disabilities. To them writing serves no purpose is physically hard on their hands and is scarey. science is similar and experiments within the classroom environment are challenging due to the needs of the students and limited resources that the school has. Gamification can provide a goal/purpose that is immediate to the students, it can present the outcomes in a variety of ways that can allievate the physical challenges that the students face. The nature of their disability ASD makes knowing what is fun for the students easy to obtain.
Observe and reflect
After playing a game what are your personal thoughts about the design and elements involved and how any of these could help you in thinking about doing the same in a learning activity?
Level 3
Premiers Reading Challenge Reflection
I think the concepts behind the challenge are in line with gamification - self-monitor progress, ,opportunity to share and add a social element, reward levels. However, I have used this and also experienced it as a parent. In my experience it isn't monitored by teachers and not used as it was designed to be used. My children rushed through books therefore, the fun emotional factor was not evident and as they grew older it had no appeal to them at all.
Zombie Learning Reflection
I would like to use something like this game in the area of language development. It covers many factors - popular culture interest, creativity, problem solving. opportunity for social engagement and peer mentoring, monitoring system to support student progress and learning. It makes the concepts of geography relevant to life. Develops some understanding as to the purpose of learning within that subject area. It's structured.
